Product Description

A look at the past, through the evidence of place names, ruined buildings, and that which is buried under the ground. This book examines sites from a Neolithic farming community in Turkey to a New World settlement in Maryland, USA, piecing together each fragment of evidence as it is unearthed. Highlighting the special techniques and technology used by modern day archaeologists, it shows how a complete picture of past communities can be built up.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The digging up of the past is as complicated a subject as the past is long; part of the strength of this attractive illustrated book, put together by two of Channel 4's Time Team, is that it gives full weight to that complexity. It falls handily into two sections, one dealing, to summarise crudely, with "what?" and the second with "where?"...Archaeology which deals with the Neolithic past gives us different sorts of insights and involves, to a great extent, different techniques to the archaeology which deals with, say, mediaeval battle sites or the ruins of the Industrial Revolution, yet both involve a good eye and a commitment to facts and the checking of facts. This first part of the atlas takes us to crucial sites from every part of the discipline and talks us through technique. The second part is a gazetteer of crucial sites and a map showing where they cluster. Lavishly illustrated throughout, with examples that range from a Coke bottle to the mask of Sargon of Akkad, this is an effective introduction to the subject--aimed particularly at young adults--but accessible and interesting to all ages. --Roz Kaveney
