Brilliant illustrations and step-by-step instructions
This beauty book is a dream. Short (116 pages)but packed with step-by-step instructions and brilliant illustrations (one would expect nothing less from the excellent Dorling Kindersley), it enables the beginner or intermediate make-up enthusiast to perfect their individual look. It helps you analyse your face shape, skin-tone etc. and then illustrates with colours and tools how to make the most of them, or cover up flaws. It takes you through all skin-care regimes such as toning and moisturising and shows you step-by-step how to apply foundation properly, for example. What I liked most was that the models had 'real' skin and less than perfect features to begin with - which means you can compare yourself and work on making your eyes look bigger with shadow or toning down rosiness with correctors, to name just a few. And the models are not all white - thank goodness. Women of all skin colour will gain from the book. Various life-like colour palettes for shadow, foundation, nail polish etc. give you much help in choosing colours which which suits your tone of skin. You can make all your choices based on these illustrations which approximate real colours, unlike lots of other beauty books. Little boxes throughout give you Tips and each section, eg. lips, eyes, nails has an 'Effects' page for recreating certain looks. There is also a wonderful gallery of eight looks for copying at home. I can really recommend this because it has an emphasis on 'classic', not fads or fashions, so it will never go out of date. Plus you take the onus for experimenting with the ideas in the book. It's biggest asset is that it assumes we are all of different skin-tone and type and works hard to cover all angles so that you can find and show-off your own 'classic' look.
Not too bad...
This is nice and simple, with lots of good tips and sections on lots of different areas of the body in an easy to use format.
I have to disagree about the models though. When you were encouraged to find your own face and skin type, I found them too samey and difficult to distinguish. The pictures were clear, but a little drab. They did give you a wider range of looks to experiment with, but some of these did seem a little strange.
a good book for those interested in make up
I brought this book several years ago when i was teenager and wanting to know more about make-up..as i was in the stage of too much blusher and blue eyeshadow!.It wasnt until a few years later that i got the book again and actually took note of what was in it.
The book features several different areas of make-up and also skincare and how to take care of the rest of your body.Over all its more than a make up book, its a well being book aswell. The pictures and diagrams are extremely helpful and it takes into account many different races and skintones aswel as different facial shapes...such as eye shape and cheek bones. It also mentions the different types of brushes, colour toners and other types of tools one may have heard of but have never been shown how to use.I myself learned how to use liquid eyeliner from this book!.
Over all this book holds a place in my heart, as i am now training to become a make-up artist and this book i believe was the start of it all.If you are already a trained make up artist or take an active interest in make up already this book will hold very little new information (unless you are unsure about entering the profession..as this may be a great starter book like it was for me, as other professinal books are very expensive)but if you are just getting into make up or want to learn more then this is the book for you.Whatever age or colour or level of make up use you may be.As it features something for everyone.Highly recommened.
