Heathen - A Review
The book starts quite slowly ,with piecemeal plot development and is about a writer who dies in suspicious circumstances and features his widowed wife as the main character. The widow, Donna, finds her husband's office being ransacked on the day of his funeral. What transpires is that he was writing a book about a secret organisation - The Hellfire Club, and that he had stolen a book from them which they are desperate to have returned.
Donna finds out more about the organisation, the missing book and her husbands intentions before his untimely death. What results is a cat and mouse game where she must stay one step ahead of the pursuers in the hunt for the book and includes showdowns in a wax musuem, her country home and a private club in London. Who finds it first? - that would be telling!
The storyline is gripping in the sense that she has to remain one step ahead of the pursuers (who seem to have infiltrated various agencies that confound her time on the run). For the ultimate 'grip' factor though, it's not quite as intense as an average Dean Koontz book, or other author of that genre for example. Also, I thought the ending could have been better - I didnt see it coming, but it could have been better all the same.
Four out of five stars.
My First Shaun Hutson
This was the first Shawn Hutson novel I have read, it was lent to me as a holiday read and I finished it within 3 days.
The book follows Donna Ward, a widow after her husband Chris dies in a car accident. As the book continues Donna realises she didn't know her husband as well as she thought she did and there are lots of questions that she wants to find the answers to. It is a compelling book and leaves you constantly want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next.
I really enjoyed this book although in places it was very gory. I am told that this is one of Hutson's more milder books so whether I would like to read a gorier one, I am at the moment undecided. The plot was predictable in places and I had guessed what was going to happen quite early on in the novel. Nevertheless it was a very interesting and compelling read and I would recommend it!
