The hugely successful drama brings its intelligent writing to a new book. Six Feet Under is a family drama with a macabre twist - it's set in a funeral parlour. The show has quickly grown into a bona fide cultural phenomenon, grabbing many Golden Globe and Emmy Awards in 2002, as well as a UK Comedy Award. Now, Six Feet Under's producers turn their attentions to creating a one-of-a-kind companion book. With an introduction and contributions by Alan Ball as well as the show's head writers, this book will reveal the untold stories of the characters and the events in their lives. The Six Feet Under characters are both people who live next door and the people we have never met. The Six Feet Under book takes us behind the scenes of their complex lives, including material from the yet-unaired third season, as well as providing synopses of the 39 episodes to set the stage. It is designed with an elegant, spare look reflecting the feel of the show and begulles readers as only Six Feet Under can.

Look Closer
Six Feet Under is one of the best television shows ever made and this, is one of the most awesome official guides ever made. Once removed from a plastic case it reveals itself as a kind of scrapbook of Six Feet Under memories, little sections sewn together with the stitching visible along the side. The layout inside follows the same format, interspersing letters, thoughts, notes, conversations and random little pieces from the characters lives with pictures from the show and literary quotes on life and death.
Some of the most interesting pieces include a letter from Nate's teachers to his parents asking them to come in for a meeting, after he was found in possession of a 'make out' map of the school, Claire's online instant message conversations with Billy when he was in hospital, early letters between Ruth and Nathaniel Sr when he was away serving in war, poetry Brenda wrote when she was little and a chapter from the fascinatingly bizarre children's book Nathaniel and Isabelle. The best part for me however, is a section from the legendary Charlotte Light and Dark. Admittedly it is not nearly enough. They should totally write the whole book, but for now it is an excellent insight and one of the many highlights.
This book brings so much background to the characters in a way your average official guide never does. By creating worlds beyond what you know. By developing the characters past and revealing things about them that the show hasn't had time to. I suppose some might be disappointed that it lacks the little cast/crew biographies, on set pictures and gloating quotes about how lovely everyone is to work with etc. etc. But to be honest, you can find that on any decent online fan site. This book is so much better than all that. It is unique, fascinating and totally worth buying. An official guide to the Six Feet Under they have never shown you.
Not your usual TV tie-in, but a whole lot better ...
Fantastic tie-in to "Six Feet Under" and its first three series - so be careful if you haven't managed to see the third series yet (in the UK, the first two series have aired on Channel 4, but the third series has just finished showing on E4). This book contains Spoilers for the third series (and pretty major ones at that!)
Great presentation - the book comes in a opaque plastic jacket with the famous Six Feet Under logo on it in red, and then the book comes out of there. Strange binding - the book does haven't a cover of its own, you can see the stitching and gluing that went into making the book!
But what of the content I hear you cry? Well it comprises of various snippets which delve into the principal characters' lives (both prior to the series and during it), such as Ruth's love letters to Nathaniel Snr when he was in Vietnam, or other gems like David getting a C- in Physical Education because he was too busy socialising and gossipping with the other boys in the class :) What I love most of all is that you can actually believe in this additional material - it's true to the characters and expands on their back story in a way that other more traditional TV guides fail to do.
All in all, fabulous book that no self-respecting Six Feet Under fan should be without!
