Synopsis
To Dream in the City of Sorrows is the ninth book in this successful series of original science fiction novels based on the Emmy Award-winning Channel Four series Babylon 5. Ambassador to the alien world of Minbar, former Babylon 5 Commander, Jeffrey Sinclair, is one of the first to learn the truth about the Shadows, the ancient race pursuing the destruction of the galaxy. Sinclair also discovers a startling secret: he is the linchpin in the plan to stop them. Now, Sinclair is asked to revive the legendary Minbar warrior group, the Rangers. But the price may be his chance to love...and his life. Catherine Sakai, commercial pilot and planetary surveryor, has lost her heart to Jeffrey Sinclair. Not even an attack by the Shadows can stop her from getting to Minbar to join him...and the Rangers. As she trains with other pilots such as the mysterious Marcus Cole, the time is coming when their skills will be tested on their first mission. Led by Sinclair, they will venture into deepest space, into a battle of stealth and might, and towards a fate none but the bravest can face...and none but the luckiest will survive...

Dreaming of a good book!
For anyone who's a fan, this is a must-buy. For anyone who isn't a fan, you'll enjoy it anyway as it doesn't hinge on former knowledge and is genuinely a good story, exploring the different forms of friendship, love and loss, and the way we express them.
It's well-written, drawing you almost immediately into the feel of the series with several plots which weave in and around each other in a very satisfying way. The understated characterisation of Jeffery Sinclair, Catherine Sakai (both quietly determined people, and the balanced partnership of a couple is rarely seen and very nice to see) and Marcus Cole (sorely missed, and in this incarnation still wracked by helpless fury at himself and fate) is pretty much spot on what we saw in the series. This look at a part of their story we only heard through hearsay before just makes us love the people that much more.
The one flaw which made me drop it to 4 stars, was the fact that the timeline doesn't quite agree with that implied by some comments in the TV series from the characters involved.
Having said that, enjoy it, it's a good book.
First B5 book I read
As a relatively new person to the world of Babylon 5, this was the first B5 book I ever read, and I would recommend this book to any B5 fan. However if you are unaware of the main "arc" storylines of the series itself, parts of this book may be unclear. However, for all those who enjoy Babylon 5 I would strongly refer this book to you. A good read.
An excellent book
This is a great book for any B5 fan, it is very well written and has an excellent story line, i enjoyed every minute of reading it.
