London at war - set in 1939 and 1940, Lavender Road follows the entwined lives of the women who live in one South London street during World War 2. Lavender Road boasts a pawnbroker, a pub, two rows of terraced working class homes, and, at one end, the big house owned by the local brewer. When war breaks out, the lives and fortunes of the families who live in Lavender Road are changed out of all recognition. For Joyce, it means a struggle to keep food on the family table; for Jen it may mean the end of her dream to become an actress; and for Pam, there is the sickening seesaw of emotions as she fights attraction to her handsome lodger and a growing distance from a husband who is judged not fit to enlist.

Brilliant books
Lavender Road is the first of a trilogy of books, (followed by Some Sunny Day and On a Wing and a Prayer) following the residents of Lavender Road. All 3 books are brilliant and I couldn't put them down. After finishing the last book I was gutted to find that there is no follow on and would love Helen Carey to write another to let us all know what happens next. If you like war time novels then you'll love these books, they are very well written and leave you thirsty for more!
A great read
This is the first book of Helen carey's that i have bought and i have to say it was good, the only down point was that i found the book a little
slow at times, but don't let that put you off, it
is in the same style as Lilian Harry or Victor pemberton so if you enjoy them im sure you will enjoy this.
As the book ends suddenly you will have to be prepaired to buy the other two books that follow
Best Hero!
After reading Lavender Road by Helen Carey I just had to read the other
two, Some Sunny Day and On a Wing and a Prayer and I really enjoyed them.
Liked all her characters, but wow, Ward Frazer!! Most gorgeous hero ever!!
Worth reading just for him.
