FADE IN SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE- SPACE Silent and endless. The stars shine like the love of God...cold and remote. Against them drifts a tiny chip of technology. CLOSER SHOT: It is the NARCISSUS, lifeboat of the ill-fated star-freighter Nostromo. Without interior or running lights it seems devoid of life. The PING of a RANGING RADAR grows louder, closer. A shadow engulfs the Narcissus. Searchlights flash on, playing over the tiny ship, as a MASSIVE DARK HULL descends toward it... James Cameron took Ridley Scott's stylish noir sci-fi thriller and used the characters to create a 'western in space' tour de force. For the first time the complete script of James Cameron's Aliens has been cleared for publication. The package will be the complete script including scenes filmed but not released into the theatres and hitherto unseen stills from the film.

Hmmmmm
Somewhat disappointing I thought. Not very well illustrated at all! Not a patch on the illustrated screenplay of another James Cameron film, T2 which had pictures on every page with much more detail of the making. And it was cheaper! (I know its a few years old, but still). I think that this book is ok, but is too expensive and does not fulfill its promise. Shame.
Out of this world !
Regarded by some as the best in the series , Aliens is a superb script by the talented Mr. Cameron and this definitive version is a true masterpiece . As if the brilliant script wasn't enough , the plot is expanded on in the "Deleted Scenes" section in which there are some shocking discoveries plus a range of cinematic photographs and information about the movie . This includes an insightful introduction from Paul Sammon . A real work of art !
Doesn't live up to the film
Alan Dean Fosters novel of Aliens (much like his first and no doubt the third) didn't really hold up to the might of the movies. Whilst it holds true to the general story, most (if not all) the details such as deaths and small events are pretty much all different. Even the final battle with the Queen is vastly different to the awesome sequence of the movie and not to mention Wierzbowski's much increased part in the first section of the movie like the original draft of the script.
Foster also babied the dialogue, with 99% of the bad language being removed. Had this been intended as a kids version of the book, that may be forgivable, but unfortunantly not this time when so much of that added to how the troopers were feeling and how they were in personality and most of all the fact they were a bunch of death-dealin' hard nut all go Marines who couldn't care less what they said.
And where was "Game over man! It's game over!"? No where...the other well known Aliens quote was again butchered with a missing word that made that sentence what it was. Instead of the well delivered and fighting "Get away from her you b*tch!", we get a simple "Get away from her, you!" like a parent telling off a small child.
Over-all, average, a good read but because of my love of the movie, not one I'll revist any time. hopefully my next book, Alien³, will be some what more entertaining before I go back to the non-movie based ones.
