Amazon.co.uk Review
Yet another leotard-dressed, long haired muscleman makes takes a leap out of the wrestling ring and into the world of book publishing--this time it's Bret "The Hitman" Hart who dresses in pink and has a patented wrestling move to crush his opponents in the ring.
Following on from the rather weighty tomes produced by wrestling stars such as The Rock and Mankind , Hitman's story is told in big writing and big pictures, making this more suited to the adolescent fan base of wrestling than the other more wordy entries into the wrestling biography genre.
It's a familiar tale, well told by Bret and co-writer Perry Lefko and thankfully manages to avoid taking itself too seriously when it comes to the wrestling anecdotes. To complain that WCW and WWF matches are more about entertainment than any sporting prowess or competitive edge is to miss the point and Hitman's story delivers all the punches, body slams and bone-crunching action shots the fans could want.
If you have never heard of Hitman, you won't be the slightest bit interested in his story, but fans of the man will love this enjoyable romp through the life of one of wrestling's most popular characters.--Jon Weir
Customer Reviews
A must have for all Bret Hart fans.
This book is worth buying just for the introduction by Rowdy Roddy Piper. (very funny) It gives a good review a Bret's eariler wrestling days, and of his recent career. It also has amazing quality pictures some never seen before. Buy it!
A Legend's Career....
This is a very thorough and enjoyable book. It is no doubt a must-have for any Bret Hart fan and in my opinion, it is the book version of Wrestling with Shadows. It shows many photos from Bret's WWE Career, his childhood, WCW and his early rookie years in Stampede Wrestling. Also, the written aspect of the book is a brutally honest account of how Bret sees the current state of wrestling. The book was written around the time of his retirement due to a concussion and it gives us Bret's opinion's of Hulk Hogan, Chris Benoit, Vince McMahon and many others. Any TRUE Wrestling fan should enjoy it!!!
A picture book praising the Hitman
Having just read Mick Foley's book, I had high expectations on this one as well. I was quite disappointed.
The book practically praises the Hitman and does about nothing to tell the reader about his background and true self. There are a lot of pictures but no "real content". Do not get me wrong, I have always liked the Hitman a lot for his in-ring skills and the atmosphere he generates, but this book really does no justice to the man - unless he really is as shallow as this book. I would have wanted to read more about his own thoughts and his childhood, but they are explained in far too few words. The book also does nothing to "reveal" the storylines behind the action and gives the impression that the sport is just about the wrestler's abilities and the matches are "fought".
I have a lot of respect for the business and the Hitman, but this book is too shallow, too full of one-sided opinions and too many pictures to my taste.
