Born at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, Mary and Walter Tilford's baby daughter is named Thursday. It was meant to be a message of hope for the future - but they could not foresee that by the time Thursday celebrated her 21st birthday, Britain would once again be at war with Germany. Thursday is determined to help in the war effort and volunteers as a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse. She is attached to the Royal Navy and begins her service at Haslar Hospital on the shores of Portsmouth Harbour. The realities of war are brought home to her when the casualties begin to arrive from Dunkirk. Young men are terribly injured, some dying, and Thursday begins to understand the true meaning of courage. While experiencing all the natural hopes and dreams of any young woman, finding pleasure and joy as well as sorrow in her work, Thursday is given her own opportunity to show strength and bravery in the face of war - and find a lasting love.

LAUNCHA GIRL CALLED THURSDAY was launched at The Royal Haslar Hospital, the setting of the book, on Thursday 18th July 3-5pm. The event was open to both invited guests and the general public and drew a crowd of over 100 people. David from the Gosport Bookshop completely sold out of copies and was forced tomake an emergency dash to Littlehampton to pick up copies for her signing atthe shop the following day! The Gosport Bookshop alone sold over 100 copies and combined with library talks and other bookshop signings we sold over 300 copies in two days. Another Great Book by Lilian Harry!
I discover Lilian Harry last summer and I have enjoyed eveyone of her books and her lastest "A Girl Called Thursday" is no expection. Ms. Harry takes the reader to war-time Portsmount where she introduces the reader to a young woman named Thursday who has just joined the VAD. As before, Ms. Harry is able to draw the read in with great characters and excellent writing. Another great book by Lilian Harry!
LOVED IT!
This is an awesome book! Lilian Harry has become one of my favorite authors! She has such a talent for making the reader relate to her characters. I know that when I'm reading one of her books, I'd better make some free time, as I won't be putting the book down very often! I look forward to more from this amazing author! Thanks Ms. Harry, for helping me understand what your country was like during WWII!
A most readable account of a World War Two VAD
I was most impressed with this story and the events at Hasler. Being a nurse myself I could sense the drama of the storyline. At the same time you are aware that although the characters and story are fictional they could be very real. The story brings the War to life for those of us who have not lived through it.
