below usual standard i'm afraid2
A somewhat disappointing effort from an obviously well appreciated author. Regular readers of the "Tweed" series will understand the nature of the books intentions from the outset, and most of the usual characters reappear. However little development of these occurs since previous outings - with the possible exception of Howard / Monica. Furthermore this books scenario is somewhat more impausible than usual, the "villain" not far short of ridicolous, and the plot is a weak limp to an unusually tame climax. Criticism is tempered to a degree by the obvious fact the world has moved on from the cold war focus when the book was written, but the same argument could be made for many others in this successful series, and they suffer less in this respect. The authors shortfall in dialogue and characters, particular female (equality and feminism obviously passed by the author) are well known but regular readers know what to expect, and these dont detract from the usual enjoyment in reading the novels - on the contrary they provide little "humour points" along the way. The author has written many better books, both before and after this, so I wouldn't intend to put anyone off overly. However i would suggest better places to introduce oneself to the world of espionage the author is familiar with.
