Arthur Lowe made 81 episodes of "Dad's Army" in nine years. This biography was written by his son. It follows his career from the Army's No 2 Field Entertainment Unit to the Ealing comedies and the new soap of 1961, "Coronation Street", and finally his success as Captain Mainwaring.

Disappointing book about great actor
This biography by the actors son is sadly poor. The book is poorly written and in some cases poorly researched as a subsequent biography has revealed. There is fine biographical material in the life of Arthur Lowe - late starter in the actor profession and late success, an enduring but troubled marriage, poor health and a comparatively early death but most importantly of all a great perfomance as Cpt. Mainwaring in the still popular 'Dad's Army' - but this biography chronicles the actors life in terms of disappointment - it could have been a better career and a happier, longer life. The tone is rather bitter and often concentrates on the authors own life and clearly troubled relationship with his father. The author is setting out to make a case for his father as a great actor who should have been known for his 'important' stage work and not 'popular' television sitcoms. In this assertion I feel the book fails - it is because of his television success that Lowe is still held in esteem and affection by the public twenty years after his death.
The worst Bio I have ever read
This book is the most disjointed poorly written book I have ever read to date. The sentences comprise of very few words before a full stop brings you abrutly to an end, leaving you wondering what it all meant. The author (who incidently is Arthur Lowes son) has given me the impression this was written over a long period, writing a few words, leaving it for a few weeks, forgetting what has been written and picking it up again.
Early on in the book were you think that you are reading about Arthur Lowes Father (the Authors Grandfather) when pages on you figure with some hesitation that it may be Arthur himself. Further examples of poor structure are the numerous times a particular subject or event is mentioned and put aside in two sentances before swiftly moving on to something completley unrelated. This book got published simply because of who the Author was, rather than writing ability.
