From the Author
A pocket guide to the Internet for kids, not their parents!
I am the father of four kids in all, ranging from just 8 months old right up to 13 years. Whilst the baby is a little young to be online just yet, the 2 year old has a website and a WAP site, and the 11 and 13 year olds are increasingly Internet aware - what with school, homework and social lives that co-exist online and off.
Because I was getting fed up forever telling my kids, and their friends, how to use search engines properly, where the best websites dealing with boy bands are to be found, or how to be safe when chatting on the Net, the idea for this book was born.
It ISN'T a guide for parents, it IS a guide for the kids themselves. But, having said that, parents can sneak a look and learn a thing or two if they like. The one excpetion being for the younger audience, say from 5 to 9, who might get more out of the guide by reading it with Mum or Dad alongside.
To sum up then, it covers safe surfing from a kids perspective, looks at email and chat, explains how to use the Internet to help with your homework as well as play games and make freinds. With pointers and reviews for hundreds of carefully selected websites included, this little book has a big heart and is the perfect gift for any kid up to around 12 or 13 years of age.
One last thing, the language has been carefully vetted by a band of 'cool' and 'kickin' kids to ensure that the old fogey writing it wasn't making a total fool of himself. From their comments so far, I'm hopeful I've suceeded, but please cut me a little slack - I'm 36 you know...
