Product Description

Cabbie Chas Tyme is shy, kind-hearted and always ready to see the best in people. His main concern is for his widowed mother, Iris, and, by working hard at Black's Taxis, he does all he can to provide for her. But Iris just wishes he'd concentrate on finding a nice girl who'd appreciate his worth. If only he had the courage to ask someone out...Meanwhile, in a local firm of solicitors in Leicester, a striking young secretary is realising that her fiance - a handsome, junior solicitor - is not the man for her and, sadly, Harrie knows it's time to rethink her life. When she takes a temporary position in the office of Black's Taxis, she soon discovers that there are some people who have little respect for the law nor care who they use to carry out their devious plans...

Worth Four Stars4
Once picked up, it's difficult to put down a Lynda Page saga. All right, that's a bit of a sweeping statement. There are exceptions. I found it quite easy to put down 'A Cut Above' and `A Lucky Break', but two duds out of the fifteen novels of hers that I've read isn't a bad return. In fact, it's all the more remarkable when you consider that `For What it's Worth' is actually very average.

This is the sort of novel that Lynda Page must write in her sleep because there is absolutely nothing new here in terms of ideas that hasn't been used in her previous work. The novel is very formulaic, the ending is obvious (we are talking romantic fiction, after all) and there's very little character development. You start reading, and you know exactly where the story is going. But, before you know it, several hours have passed. The pleasure is all in the journey.

Here are the basics: Chas is a taxi driver. He's a very nice man. Harriet is a secretary. She's a very nice lady. Guess what happens? There's a sub-plot containing some villainy. Material this thin takes 436 pages. They are, however, very entertaining pages and should delight existing and new fans.

The good news for new readers is that Lynda Page has written more substantial novels than this. Her best work, in my opinion, centres on characters whose lives take a dramatic upheaval. Of her recent novels, the best example of this is `No Going Back' and from her earlier work, `Josie' and the wonderful `Just By Chance' are well worth reading.
