Product Description

One of Lyn Andrews' first eight novels, transferring from the original publisher to Headline; already steady sellers, they will be targeted for a huge increase in sales.

The Chatterton family is far too posh for the Liverpool slums where they've ended up. Nancy Butterworth and Abbie Kerrigan, lifelong residents of the place, tried to befriend Dee Chatterton, but her mother wants her to have nothing to do with such rough children. The Burgess family looks forward to the arrival of their young cousin Sean from Dublin, and Nancy is not the first to lose her heart to the Irish charmer. In 1914 things are to change dramatically, and the families are to find that money and social position mean nothing when the horrors of the First World War invade their lives and take away their sons.

From the Back Cover
The Chatterton family was posh, everyone could see that - far too posh for Scotland Road, the Liverpool slum area where they had ended up. Nancy Butterworth and Abbie Kerrigan, lifelong residents of the place, tried to befriend Dee Chatterton, but Dee's snobbish and sick mother wanted her family to have nothing to do with the rough street children. Mr Chatterton, meanwhile, weighed down with the worry and shame of having lost all his money, tried ineffectually to get together a home, and was not too proud to accept help from plump, good-hearted Bridie Butterworth and her neighbours. In the corner shop the Burgess family looked forward with excitement and trepidation to the arrival of their young cousin Sean from Dublin, and Nancy was not the only girl to lose her heart, and much else besides, to the Irish charmer.

But with the arrival of 1914 things were to change dramatically for the inhabitants of this poor but closely-knit community. And the Chattertons, the Butterworths, the Kerrigans and the Burgesses found that money and social position meant little when the horrors of the First World War invaded their lives and took away their sons.

Customer Reviews

Another amazing story from Lyn Andrews5
This book grabs you from the first word to the last. As soon as I started to read it, I could see all the characters so cleary, as if I were there with them. It only took me two days to read it, as I could not put it down. I cried when Dee was going through hell with her Mother, and I cried when Jerry's father was beating him up. The next book from this brilliant author is well worth waiting for. I have to see what happens to all my new 'freinds'.

Mist Over The Mersey5
Yet another excellent read from this author. I have only just discovered her but from the books I have read so far I really enjoy the theme and setting that being around Liverpool at the turn of the last century. She illustrates so vividly the hardships endured by the people at that time. Once I start reading her books I find it difficult to put them down as the characters draw you in straight away.
