About the Author
Cary Prague is an internationally best selling author and lecturer in the database industry. He is the owner of Cary Prague Books and Software, the world s largest Microsoft Access add on vendor. This direct mail company creates and markets add on software, books, and video training for personal computer databases. Formerly, he held numerous management positions in Corporate Information Systems, including Director of Managed Care Reporting for MetraHealth (MetLife and Travelers Insurance joint venture); Director of Software Productivity at Travelers Insurance, where he was responsible for software support and training for 35,000 end users, and Director of Corporate Finance, where he was responsible for the selection and installation of Fixed Asset and Payroll Systems; and Manager of Information Centers for Northeast Utilities.
Cary also runs a consulting company, specializing in Microsoft Access applications and training. His clients include many local and national companies, including software companies, manufacturers, public utilities, and broadcast companies. Sloppy, rushed effort that poorly rehashes previous edition
I am very, very disappointed with the book, which I purchased last week. It has obviously been rushed to print. The diagrams are often difficult to read because wording in the diagrams is "washed out." If that weren't bad enough, it appears to be unedited. For one example, the book includes the statement "Once your table is saved, however, if you change a field name that is also used in queries, forms, or reports, you have to change it in those objects as well." Five pages later, a second sentence completely contradicts the first: "In previous versions of Access, changing a field name usually meant that any queries, forms, or reports that referenced that field name would no longer work and had to be manually changed. Access 2000 automatically seeks out most occurrences of the name and changes it for you."
Desperately needs rewriting!
This book was obviously brought out to coincide with the realease of Access 2000, and therefore was not given enough thought. Most of the examples in the book do not work and differ from the accompanying CD. As a starting point for a beginner in Access 2000 the book can be very confusing and frustrating. Needed more thought before it's release, and needs seriously rewriting before it's second realease.
Great Book that teaches Access to real people
I thought the book was outstanding. It followed a simple example from start to finish. When I was done, I had the skills to create a fairly complex program. I had previously bought the Access 97 Bible and really appreciated the many places where the differences were pointed out. I especially liked the coverage of the new ADO, Data Access Pages, and Microsoft Database SQL Server Database Engine.
