Customer Reviews
Excellent book for all excel users
John Walkenbach is recognised as one of the leading excel authors/gurus and this book certainly does not disappoint. Walkenbach takes the reader through the basics of excel (useful to skim this section even if you are an experienced excel user as you are bound to pick up new ideas) before tackling the various specific functions used in excel. Given that the whole book is dedicated to the use of functions, user-defined functions, ranges, names, etc with little reference to pivot tables, charts, formatting and other general excel issues, the subject matter is very concise but at the same time very easy to read. Like most excel books the author does regurgitate a lot of the information already published in the excel help files but this information is presented in an easy to read style. For example, Walkenbach lists all the excel functions with their syntax but these are presented in a style which is perhaps easier to follow than the excel help files. One of Walkenbach's strong points is that he presents several different approaches to the same issue which is refreshingly different from the 'I know best' approach adopted by some technical authors. The writing style is very straightforward and the author doesn't unnecessarily expand his writing to beef up the book. (although there is a lot of repetition between this book and his excel 2000 bible) If your main use for excel is writing spreadsheets, for example in financial modelling, then I would strongly recommend this book. Unless you're an MVP you will definitely learn from this book. However if you use excel for more general purposes such as reporting and analysis then perhaps his excel 2000 bible is more suited to your needs, particularly if your excel skills are low to moderate.
Never Put It Down!
Originally, I had a problem to resolve and after searching the book shelves came to this volume, ordered it and now I never put it down! It has proved invaluable for Excel projects and though I vary Excel versions between home and offices it nonetheless fits all I need in a straightforward, clear way. The solutions put forward often lead to ideas to resolve other problems. Buy it - find one solution and its paid for!
