Customer Reviews

Provides good building blocks for the newcomer and as a useful reference5
I have found this book very useful. I used to program many years ago (FORTRAN, Assembler etc) and never considered Excel VBA (at all!) until I needed to move columns of data from several spreadsheets into rows of a report. It was a means to an end and I wanted to do it in my own time (I wasn't sure how successful I would be) so I decided to find a helpful book to guide me. In fact, it took two helpful books; this and Excel VBA Macro programming (ISBN: 0-07-223144-0). But let's get back to the book in question.

Initially, it felt like reading dictionary (so much information!) but, after getting grips with the Excel VBA world and seeing some logic to it, this book has become my friend. I think somewhere the author, Julia Kelly, says that many of the examples are there as answers to the questions she was repeatedly asked during training sessions. It is amusing to read some of these ready useful responses because I can imagine the scene. For example: "Why do I get an error the second time I run this macro"; answer: "the component you are trying to create was created the first time around". There are many (more positive!) examples as well and it is this attention to detail that makes this book so enjoyable to read. (The jury is still out on whether reading about Excel VBA is enjoyable!). The chapters are grouped into seven parts, each preceded by a summary, so searching for a solution is made that much easier. The examples are described very well, with the spreadsheet, VBA screen and, where appropriate, a form on the right of the page, being supported by explanations on the left. While this book provided me with the building blocks, as a dictionary would provide words, it did not provide me with the knowledge I needed to develop the flexible software. I needed another book to supply me with some sentences! This was provided by the second book: Excel VBA Macro programming.

Although I have had this book, Master Visually Excel 2003 VBA Programming, for several months, I still find that this collection of simple but well explained examples a valuable reference. I also like its rigour.
