Good read which makes you think
I thoroughly enjoyed this biography of Shunryu Suzuki. It integrates the story of his life with his teaching and really the story of the movement of zen from Japan to the USA. I finished it two days ago and still am not sure how I have been left feeling, which is good. Suzuki is not made a saint here - his flaws, his errors, his failings are plain to see. I must have enjoyed it - I want to get hold of the follow up on what happened to zen in the States after his death!
Everything changes...
A plain and raw picture of a Zen Master. Sometimes it feels that you are watching a documentary movie as you step on Suzuki's quotes along with the Chadwick's own writing. If it would be possible to write picture of Suzuki, it would be like this. No saint, no devil just himself.
extraordinary both as a biography and as a Soto Zen primer
This is one of the most extraordinary biographies I have ever read. Balanced, humane, piercing, frank and one suddenly realizes it works as a remarkable zen primer as well. Chadwick has accomplished a rare feat indeed, highly recommended to those with long-time zen experience and those who have only a passing interest.
