Average customer review:Product Description
This is a comprehensive, pocket-sized clinical handbook covering all the information that a medical student would encounter during pediatric clinical rotation. The content is organized by presenting complaint, and each chapter follows the same format - presenting symptoms, differential diagnosis, laboratory assessment, treatments, and suggested readings. The book also includes tables of normal lab values, a comprehensive syndrome glossary, an instructive cardiology lab, a glossary of surgical terms, and a pediatric medication guide.

Customer Reviews
handy pocket sized reference book to have on the wards.
Pocket sized( but rather bulky) handbook, which goes through 74 common problems encountered in paediatrics. The problems are covered in a thorough and logical format. Each problem is defined, and then each of the differential diagnoses are discussed. The problems however, are arranged in alphabetical order rather than in order of systems. E.g. ascites is chapter 16 whilst hepatomegaly is chapter 42. Handy if you are just looking up one specific symptom for a particular case, but not so good to actually sit down and learn from.
Has a section called 'Cardiology Lab' which explains how to interpret ECG's, chest radiographs and cardiac catheterisations. ( Helpful if your cardiology firm was a long time ago and ECG's are beginning to look unreadable again!)
The surgical and symptoms Glossaries are both a useful and good idea. Saves you having to search through a large reference textbook for obscure surgical procedures or syndromes which you just know your consultant is dying to quiz you on.
Points I liked
Hints - Valuable hints throughout the chapters which range from bedside clinical tips through to factual knowledge.
Most of the problems have a flow chart to work through when presented with a child with that particular complaint.
Points I didn't Like
It's a pity that some of the symptoms aren't illustrated. Lack of pictures or even line drawings, may put off anyone who is right-hemisphere dominated.
The editors have managed to pack a wealth of information into a pocket sized book.....probably due to the size 6 font used throughout!
Conclusion This book is suitable for anyone wanting an at a glance guide when working on the wards, and for those who don't need illustrations in a textbook to keep their attention span going. It does cover a lot of ground and some people may find that it manages to cover their syllabus entirely.
