Customer Reviews
Easily accessible, OT relevant overview of conditions.
This book is very easy to use and provides an invaluable starting point for gaining insight into the occupational effects of a condition on an individual, and what the occupational therapists potential role is with the client.
The book is split into chapters each covering chronic conditions - 17 in all, with both the mental health and physical side well represented. E.g. spinal cord injury, dementia, schizophrenia, chronic pain.
Each chapter is laid out in the same format for easy clear access, with an introduction to the topic, aetiology, incidence and prevalence, course and prognosis, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, medical/surgical management, impact on occupational performance. An identical occupational performance profile table is given in each chapter divided into three areas, performance areas,(ADL, etc.) performance components (motor etc.), and performance contexts, with the areas affected in bold type. This provides a clear summary of a persons functioning, and the vital areas that an OT would need to assess.
Each chapter ends with a couple of case studies, providing further insights into what it could be like to experience the condition..
At the end of the book is a very comprehensive glossary of terms, the core components of OT are identified and the components in the table are defined. A list of common medications are provided with possible side effects.
This book is a very useful starting resource. Specific OT interventions are not discussed in depth instead areas that would need further consideration are highlighted. The main value of this book lies in its applicability to OT, and concise way of looking at a condition, making it an ideal reference resource for any student OT This book is written and published in the USA, which becomes apparent when reading it.
