Surprisingly good4
I was recommended this book for a university course on VB and I was expecting a good tutorial book with good useful step by step instructions on how to do things. The book is nothing like that. The tutorial sections are no better than any other book on VB, but where this book lacks in teaching it more than makes up for in it's reference section.

The book is basically four books in one with a reference section at the back, for referencing the other four books. The four books are, Introduction To Visual Basic, Practical Visual Basic, Introduction To Visual Basic Scripting & The Internet and Introduction To Visual Basic For Applications. So with the detailed 228 page reference section indexing the other 737 pages (the four books) you have a comprehensive VB dictionary at your disposal. The reference section provides either direct access to the necessary information or to a section in one of the books, talking about what you want to know.

This book isn't a one stop VB book by all means and no single VB book is, but if you find yourself stuck because you can't remember how to format a date properly or you have forgotten how to do an error handler then this book is a great tool to have.

Not a book I would recommend!3
When I bought this book I really should have found out a bit more about it but I didn't and bought a bad book! The book is very vague examples are not explained in enough detail, I was finding myself going back to see if I had missed something, which ain't that easy if you've ever seen the size of the book. It is also terribely laid out, one moment your doing a simple circles program the next your doing screensavers! I already had a reasonable understanding of VB6 and thought this book would simply advance that knowledge, but this assumption was certainly untrue!

The book did have some good examples although not all the code was perfect and not very clear from the rest of the text. This book could be usful if you just want some tips and pointers and maybe some ideas but beginner's wanting all the info need to look else where.

I got about 100 pages into the book and got extremely bored!

Useful reference and sampler4
The book covers all the basics and is worth it for the reference section alone. It is not a teach yourself book but a very handy 'I've forgotten how to do....' reference. I pull it off the shelf at regular intervals when programming.
