Editorial Reviews

From the Author
With the release of Photoshop Elements 2, I am sure Adobe has another hit on their hands. For a fraction of the cost of the full version of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements is one of the best software deals around -- and it's only getting better. Adobe improved an already great product with new features and enhancements to old ones. I did the same with Photoshop Elements 2 Solutions: adding entire sections focusing on the new features found in version 2, and refining and improving many of the step-by-step instructions. The CD includes over 100 of the images from the book for practice, as well as a host of useful plug-ins and applications. I'm extremely proud of this book. Once again, I had the privilege to work with the Adobe Photoshop Elements creative team -- and a host of other unpaid, enthusiastic beta users -- to help the product to market. What was particularly rewarding was Adobe's receptiveness to everyone's input. Once again, Tonbo and Command Z, the designer and producer, did a fantastic job laying out the color images and text to make the information readily accessible. Once again, Sybex, the publisher, committed an extremely qualified and dedicated staff to the book. I'd also like to acknowledge and thank the many readers of the first edition, whose valuable comments and suggestions were integrated into this new book. I encourage anyone with questions about the book to contact me.

Making your photos as good as they can be5
This book is for people who want to make their photos as good as they can be, and are prepared to put in some time and mental effort in learning how to use Elements 2. The book is divided into chapters which each covers a job you are likely to want to do, such as improving faces, making composites, improving landscape shots, preparing images for the web, and many more. The Photoshop Elements 2 program is not organised that way - it has its Tools and Filters grouped into the functions they perform, not into the jobs the user wants to do, so as you follow the book you have to jump all over the program getting the Tools you need. Quite a mental exercise, but that's life with Elements. Aaland gives hundreds of tips for avoiding disasters and saving time as he goes through the step-by-step instructions for every task. Not much space is wasted on those amazing but rarely used filter effects; the emphasis is on making photos and web images that are beautiful and useful. I really felt I was learning from a multimedia professional, not a technical author. Again and again I found myself saying "Aha, so that's how you do it!". If you are a newcomer to computers or image processing, or are just going to stick to the "Quick Fix", then this book and Elements 2 are probably more than you need. Having had some experience with a simpler program, I quickly learned to use the extra power of Elements so if you, too, are ready to go beyond the basics of digital photography, I recommend this book.

Excellent introduction to a complex but powerful program.5
So many books on Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 - which one to buy? I requested several from my local public library and decided that Mikkel Aaland's book with its CD ROM was the one which suited my style of working the best. Working through the examples, before getting to grips with the program, gave me the confidence to try many of its features; rather than say "I'm a novice, I'll stick to Quick Fixes".

A Professional's view is always helpful5
I found this book to be very useful and entertaining. I really learned a lot from reading it. The author is instructive and to the point. Don't waste your time in trying to read the millions of other books on PE2. This is one of the best around and the author really knows what he's talking about. Can't wait to read more of his books! Definitely 5 stars!
