Richard Lynch is the author Special Edition Using Photoshop 6 and Adobe Photoshop 5 How–To, as well as numerous articles on Photoshop, scanning, digital photography and imaging for various magazines. He is the editor of more than 30 current photography and digital imaging how–to books. Makes Photoshop Elements much more useful
This book shows what you can do with Photoshop Elements - it's much more than a dumbed down version of Photoshop. The CD that comes with the book contains the Hidden Power Tools, which adds a set of very useful tools like Curves, different colour separations etc., that are normally only available in the full version of Photoshop, to Photoshop Elements. The book not only discusses the features of PS Elements and the tools, it also contains a lot of info about what you can do to improve your digital pictures. It also contains a section about vector graphics and creating graphics for websites.

This book is not for absolute beginners or people who just want to digitally improve their photos with a single button click. But if you want to get the best out of your photos and you're willing to invest some time in working with PS Elements, this book and the Hidden Power Tools are great.

Excellent book for advanced users/ experienced photographers
This is not a 'beginners' book. It's aimed squarely at the experienced photographer looking to move into the digital darkroom but not wanting to fork out for the full Photoshop product. It's well written and builds upon underlying principles of digital photography which are explained in some detail in the book. For example want to know how to make stunning B&W prints from your colour images? Don't use the obvious de-saturate/graycale route, use colour channels (RGB). But it's very difficult to do in elements when compared to Photoshop with its 'channels' function but it can be done. This book explains how from first principles and then provides a tool that allows it to be done quickly and efficiently.
The accompanying cd of tools is essential for any photographer wanting to use Elements as their main imaging software.
My only minor gripe would be that it does assume a reasonable level of proficiency with the Elements front-end and basic functions.

Turbo charge Elements
If you have moved beyond beginner in Elements or are frustrated by some of the limitations then buy this book. It doesn't turn Elements into Photoshop CS but goes along way. The author guides you step by step through "missing" techniques like channels and also provides on CD an add on to automate many of these techniques. The reviewer who gave this book a single star because it isn't a beginners book was being very unfair - it's not marketed as a beginners book!
