Trial By Ice5
Trial By Ice provides an excellent introduction to the life of Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the last great figures of the Heroic Age of exploration. Naturally enough, it pays particular attention to the Endurance expedition, Shackleton's attempt to cross the Antarctic continent. Although strictly speaking a failure, the Endurance expedition is one of the great stories of survival against the odds and it is told here in a lively and interesting way. The book is fully and informatively illustrated and, although clearly aimed at children (recommended age 4-8), it is not without insight into Shackleton's character and motivation to explore. Having read Shackleton's own account of the expedition, South, I found this book particularly helpful in explaining some of the basic terms such as "pemmican" and "hoosh" (ground dried meat, and a stew made of pemmican with hard biscuits crumbled into it, respectively) which were not explained in the other book but cropped up a great deal. Trial By Ice also touches on related subjects such as the history of polar exploration, Captain Scott, the whaling industry and the First World War which help to set the story in context. This is an educational yet exciting book for younger readers, with plenty of pictures and interesting information to keep parents entertained as well.

This appears to be a child's book, as inside the back jacket it says it is for ages 8+! No information about this on the description. However, the pictures are quite good, which is it's saving grace.
