Excellent first resource for high school science students
The Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Chemistry is one of the best high school level chemistry resources I have found. Students find it easy to use and easy to understand. The illustrations, diagrams, and pictures intrigue them and help them understand difficult chemistry concepts with color and everyday examples.
In my science courses, students must write end-of-term project and research reports often on subjects they have only limited exposure to. I usually recommend that they start with the Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Chemistry, especially when their science textbook has not been helpful.
Beautiful, engaging even for younger children
Lovely book: clear explanations, lots of pictures and diagrams, sensible cross-references. Much of it is accessible to children below the target age group: this is a good gift for a sciencey child of any age.
Btw the Dictionary of Science in this series is, apparently, exactly the Chemistry, Physics and Biology dictionaries in one volume (but the single volume is better for reading in bed, of course!).
