A masterpiece of writing about people gathered in prayer5
Lathrop continues his excellent study of liturgy, begun with his earlier book "Holy Things", and takes us to the heart of Christian liturgy: a gathered assembly in communal prayer. He shows that it is through active participation that the people become a holy people. He uses insights from human anthropology to develop the importance of the human person in the context of the group, so showing that churches must take account of local cultural forms of expression in the way that they pray. This work above all has something important and worth reading about ecumenical worship: he hopes we will all come to do similar things together, even though they might mean slightly different things to each church.
