Linking the Centuries
This is both a digestible and accessible anthology, juxtaposing established poets with others to whom the centuries haven't been so kind.
By arranging the poems alphabetically by poet (all of whom must be dead to qualify !) it is intriguing to note the commonality of themes and pre-occupations - a vertable act of alchemy by the three editors. The very selection is a sort of polemic and probably the source of some wide ranging debate.
It's most attractive quality is the compactness - I read this carefully at least five times during a fortnight lurking among the shade in Turkey - without getting jaded by the difference.
A welcome antidote to those anthologies which always posit an unworkable selection theory before the dance begins.
