A rites of passage masterpiece
This is a wonderful book. People who are familiar with the film and soundtrack might be a little surprised by the quality of the writing and depth of this. The story focuses on the self-styled 'Rhygin' who was brought up in a quiet country village by his grandmother. The descriptive narrative is excellent - to the point where you can almost smell the mangoes and wood smoke. From these humble, though happy, beginnings the story captivates you as he moves to Kingston. Read this, it is not a ganster or yardie book - don't be put off by the rather graphic cover - it is much more about growing up and surviving in a tough environment, as still exist in present day Jamaica. SELAH!
