What are systems? What is society? What happens to human beings in a hypermodern world? This book is an introduction to Niklas Luhmann's social system theory which explains specific functions like economy and mass media from a cybernetic perspective. Integrating various schools of thought including sociology, philosophy and biology Luhmann Explained results in an overall analysis of "world society". Special attention is given to the present-day relevance of Luhmann's theory with respect to globalization, electronic mass media, ethics, and new forms of protest.

Comprehensive introduction and discussion
Very good and comprehensive discussion of main concepts of Luhmann philosophy/sociology with up-to-date examples, (in-depth discussion on media), additional chapters on relations to other big thinkers (Kant, Husserl, Marx, Habermas), dictionary and references. Strongly recommended introduction.
Finally I understand Luhmann's social systems!
After reading original works of Luhmann and some commentaries I was in despair with little understanding of what it's all about... Then I discovered this very nicely written book and finally I feel like I understand Luhmann's theories...highly recommended!
