From the Back Cover

Covering molecular genetics from the basics through to genome expression and molecular phylogenetics, Genomes 3 is the latest edition of this pioneering textbook. Newly updated to incorporate the recent major advances, Genomes 3 is an invaluable companion for any undergraduate throughout their studies in molecular genetics.

Genomes 3 builds on the achievements of the previous two editions by putting genomes, rather than genes, at the centre of molecular genetics teaching. Recognising that molecular biology research was being driven more by genome sequencing and functional analysis than by research into genes, this approach has gathered momentum in recent years.

One of the outstanding features is the clarity of style and presentation. The artwork has been entirely re-drawn for the third edition, with the emphasis throughout on simplicity and scientific consistency. The text likewise avoids any over-complication of the subject matter. Genomes 3 provides the reader with a simple and elegant treatment of this fast-moving and rapidly expanding field.

  • Two NEW chapters on genome anatomies, covering the latest sequencing achievements
  • NEW chapter on genome function, to describe the latest technologies used in studying the transcriptome and the proteome
  • NEW chapter on recombination, providing expanded coverage of genome evolution
  • Major restructuring of chapter order, to align the book more closely to the practical reality of molecular genetics courses
  • Newly designed and significantly expanded end-of-chapter exercises, including multiple choice questions and innovative figure tests
  • Newly re-drawn artwork, with the emphasis throughout on simplicity and scientific consistency
  • FREE CD-ROM of the artwork supplied with every copy

About the Author

Professor Terry Brown graduated from Queen Elizabeth College, London with a BSc Hons in Microbiology in 1974, and from University College London with a PhD in 1977. He joined the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology as a postdoctoral researcher in 1981, and has remained in Manchester ever since, becoming the UK's first Professor of Biomolecular Archaeology in 2000. He was Head of Biomolecular Sciences from 2002–2004 and has been Associate Dean in Life Sciences since 2004.

Terry Brown has been active in genomics and biomolecular archaeology since 1989. He is particularly interested in the origins and spread of agriculture and has published a number of research papers that describe how examination of the genomes of wheat and maize can provide information on the history of cultivation of these crops.

Terry has a strong commitment to the public understanding of science. As well as being the author of eight text books he has also given talks to groups as diverse as the British Association for the Advancement of Science and local Women's Institutes.

Customer Reviews

Best Molecular Genetics Textbook!5
This is an updated version (2006) which is significantly better than previous edition. Compared to Human Molecular Genetics (Strachan & Read), the Genome 3 is by far an easier textbook to read with excellent illustrations and an accompanying CD with all photos in jpeg or powerpoint ready figures - excellent for Lecturers who teach on the subject!! It has good introduction from DNA to genes to DNA replication /transcription/translation and more. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in molecular genomics especially undergraduates science/medical/dental students.

Very Nice Book To Read5
I was looking for a book that must have very easy script to understand and provide good knowledge too... And I found this book very perfect.
