A great book about one of the best women's novels ever.
I fell in love with the Stone Diaries from the first time I read it, and I've read it every summer since then. It never fails to move, amuse and inspire me, as a writer. This guide is equally inspiring. It features a very clever analysis of the novel, and covers all of the themes - making you appreciate even more what an amazing accomplishment the novel was. The first part of the book features an interview with Carol Shields, which is remarkable for the fact that it appears to have been conducted while Shields was undergoing treatment for cancer. She comes across as an incredibly wise and delightful woman - something you can glean from the novel itself, but wonderful to have it confirmed for me! I truly hope she is able to write more extraordinary novels like this one.
