Average customer review:Product Description
This new edition of the Daily Office Book includes a selection of short Bible readings, which follow the same daily and weekly pattern as the psalms. The full text of the Common Worship Psalter is included in this edition. These are printed where they are designed to be read. The section called "After the Office" is now renamed "Occasional Services" as these should stand on their own and not just as a conclusion to the full Office. In addition, refrains have been omitted and the responsory shortened to a simple versicle and response. The editors have also simplified "The Christian Year" in two ways - major feasts of the Church are indicated in bold type in the Calendar but it is left to the user how to mark other festivals and commemorations. Thus the seasons have been integrated with the saintly holy days and things are therefore much less complicated.

A Portable Common Worship Daily Prayer for travellers ?
I came across this new edition of Celebrating Common Prayer quite by accident and purchased it straight away.
I have not been disappointed !
As a user of the old "Celebrating Common Prayer" office book I found the transition to the interim Common Worship "Daily Prayer" easy but not entirely satisfactory especially when travelling (office book plus lectionary plus bible!)
The new interim Common Worship Daily Prayer book is an attempt to improve on Celebrating Common Prayer and only partially succeeds as it tries too hard to include everyone and thus cuts our good traditional optional material and confuses the sequence of offices in the book. This new portable volume brings the texts of CCP into line with Common Worship while providing a great office book for travellers AND it includes a good range of traditional material such as the Angelus and other ancient prayers of the Church.
It is the best of both worlds - I hope that the final version of Common Worship Daily Prayer shows the same wisdom.
If you want to pray a CCP style Daily Office but want to travel light - Buy this book!
Ingenious system for daily Christian Prayer
I am an American Episcopalian who purchased this book on a visit to London 2 years ago, and have used it almost every day since. As the previous reviewer noted, it provides a compact alternative to the Church of England's new 'Common Worship: Daily Prayer'. It may be used alone while traveling or supplemented by lectionary, Bible, and/or appropriate anthologies such as the Society of St. Francis' companion volumes, 'Celebrating the Saints' and 'Celebrating the Seasons', at home.
Be Warned !
This edition (ISBN-10: 0826465285 or ISBN-13: 978-0826465283) is not a "new" edition at all! It is just a larger version of Celebrating Common Prayer with more white space on the pages, but exactly the same sized print. It is also the same thickness of paper. I really do not know why this was published as it is. A presentation edition which, this is supposed to be, in my opinion should be at least in a leather bound edition and perhaps also in fine india paper, so thinner. This one is a great disappointment. The only thing I can think of where this edition might be an advantage is if the user wanted to make marginal notes, for instance to write in additional material or notes as in during study.
An updated newer version is actually Celebrating Daily Prayer, which, even so, seems to be more of an interim condensed version of Daily Prayer (Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England). I would hope that as soon as possible a final condensed verion of Common Worship: Daily Prayer on these lines is published. But PLEASE PUBLISHER, produce these books in a more convenient pocket size than you are doing. Editions more sized like the original Celebrating Common Prayer: Pocket Version (Society of St Francis), also printed in the same sized print, (even if thicker rather then larger in cover size), would be much more helpful to those of us on the road. Having said it would be better to produce a thinner version on India paper which would be even better still for travelling etc. Even if this made the book more expensive I would buy it.
A companion version of the minor offices would be very useful as well, as long as it was proportionately thinner. The Franciscan supplement as found in the full Society of St Francis version would be very useful as another supplementary volume.
Finally, I have used Celebrating Common Prayer for a number of years now and it is one of the best forms of pocket daily offices available, even if the unfortunate trend has been to make the volumes larger, which I hope will be reversed again.
