A missed opportunity
This book was disappointingly vapid. It is ghost written so the fault does not really lie at Lisa Beamer's door but with her co-author Ken Abraham. The first 160 pages or so are anecdotes from her early life and Todd's early life. Whilst these stories must hold great significance for Lisa and her family their presentation in the book fails to impress on the reader any real picture of the Todd she loved so much. Indeed they are somewhat tedious. From about p 168 onwards we come to the story of Sept 11th. I read this hoping to gain a real insight into how a woman dealt with Sept 11th. However, her account skims over the surface of the events she describes and left me with the feeling that she had drawn a veil over the real depth of her grief and the specific challenges that a sudden death from terrorism brings. Clearly if she has done this out of a desire for privacy this is her perogative but it significantly weakens the book. It is no accident that this book( from a religious publisher) is catagorised as inspiration first and biography second. Her focus is on her faith and how she relied on it to get her through rather than the day to day details of her survival in late 2001. Even then there is no deep theological insight or turmoil indicated. this book is gentle and radiates a true committed faith. As such it may well bring comfort and hope to others of the same - or seeking- faith in a bereavement situation or those specifically seeking undemanding accounts of the application of an evangelical Christian faith, but if you are searching for Sept 11th accounts there are better. (In particular Jere Longman's 'Among the heros' which deals exclusively with Flight 93 and includes Todd Beamers involvement). This book gives nothing new or deeper than was apparent from the shortest of media accounts at the time.
A Hard book to Review
"Let Roll: Ordinary Pepple Extraodinary Courage" by Lisa Beamer was a very hard book for me review. Lisa tells the story about herself and Todd before and after they were married and 9-11-01 and beyond. I book hard at times due the fact that while religion was very important to the couple, yet some readers may be turn off by this. Also, Ms. Beamer does not address any real hard questions in the book such as "Why did she recieve so much attention after 9-11 and other families didn't not" Its hard for me to say this but this book seem a little self-serving.
