Product Description

Two distinguished radiologists and a renowned odontologist combine their lifetime collections of photographs dealing with radiologic diagnosis of violence. This atlas not only includes radiographs related to clinical forensic medicine, but also illustrates the radiologic techniques that detect arms, explosives, and other weapons. Providing over 700 large, black and white radiographs and 30 color photos, the atlas allows for quick reference in cases of child abuse, police brutality, starvation, and other results of trauma. Radiologists in crime laboratories will have comparison photographs to recognize foreign material, such as letter bombs, as well as homicide by irradiation.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"[A] timely reference . .. The outstanding feature of this atlas is its astonishing collection of over 700 radiographs and photographs . A radiologic catalog of this magnitude could only be found in the possession of distinguished and accomplished practitioners, and the editors are acknowledged as being among the leaders in their respective fields. CRC Press produces a handsome volume, and this is no exception. [T]he quality of these images is remarkable. [Includes] new chapters on torture and terrorism that are a valuable resource for practicing anthropologists who rely heavily on radiographic imaging in their work ." - American Journal of Physical Anthropology "This is a clearly written and illustrated book on Abuse, Torture, Terrorism and Inflicted Trauma by distinguished Radiologists and Odontologists...This is an authoritative book and should be of considerable value to all personal involved with Forensic Science...make it a useful reference. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to all those involved in Forensic Science." -Mary Baker, BAHID - British Association for Human Identification "This is a truly unique imaging atlas. The topic of mechanism of injury is not unique, but the manner of injuries covered in this atlas is and thus this book is without comparison." -Carol L. Andrews, M.D., in Doody's Electronic Journal

From the Back Cover
The results of aggression against humans can be hideously obvious, but may also be entirely concealed from casual inspection. Often, only exploration of the hidden recesses of the mind via psychiatric evaluation, or radiologic exploration of the inner recesses of the body can reveal the evidence of such violence. This book focuses on the latter.

A Radiologic Atlas of Abuse, Torture, Terrorism, and Inflicted Trauma combines the lifetime experience of two distinguished radiologists and a renowned odontologist to provide an unprecedented collection of radiographs depicting the results of violence on the human body.

Victims of aggression range from the tiniest infant to entire populations. Hopefully you will never encounter every situation covered in this book. However, should you come across any, you will want A Radiologic Atlas of Abuse, Torture, Terrorism, and Inflicted Trauma within reach.

Unique resource for forensic practitioners5
This book can provide one with an excellent revision resource in forensicmedicine as well as presenting some more unusual findings. The real valueof this book to the forensic medical practitioner is that it assists onein identifying those cases which might benefit from referral forradiography, to further investigate and document injury. For thepractitioner involved in forensic clinical examination this book serves asa valuable reminder of the possible underlying radiological findings thatmight be present for a given pattern of injury or forensic 'syndrome'. Itwill also be of interest to those working in Emergency Medicine, where thesubtle radiological signs of abuse more frequently present.
