Customer Reviews

A great introduction to a complex subject5
Summing up an entire century of any subject in just over 200 pages is hard enough, especially when it is as complex and fast-moving a subject as maritime development in the twentieth century. By using a number of authors who are apparently 'exerts in their field', this History of 20th century Seafaring is a well balanced book - it doesn't just look at the World Wars, but at polar exploration, transport, liners and cargo ships, pirates, archaeology, the environment, and just about any other subject that you can think of to do with the sea in the past 100 years. The only problem is that no subject is covered in a great amount of detail, as the pressure is on to cover so much in so few pages. As a general introduction to the most important aspects of the subjkect this book is ery good; the reading list lets you go off and look at individual topics in more detail. It would be a good school or university library book. The photographs section is wonderful, concentrating on not concentrating on any one subject too much. There are some spectacular images of life at sea.
