Do you ever get the feeling that your computer, and all the information you have so painstakingly put into it, is somehow floating away with you - it's there, but it's ungraspable and outside your control? "The Which? Computer Troubleshooter" can help, because it explains how the computer's "mind" works, and shows how to work through the problem without having to resort to expensive computer helplines. As well as explaining how to set up your system properly, "The Which? Computer Troubleshooter"'s instructions demonstrate in words and pictures how to complete a wide range of standard tasks without error. It examines common stumbling-blocks, presents examples of ways in which you can use your PC more efficiently, and includes sections on preventive maintenance, installing add-ons and getting online. Using this book, you should be able to predict and prevent mistakes while carrying out basic tasks, and find out what to do when gremlins strike.

Ready to throw Windows out of the window? Read this first!!
At last! A simple to use book, that shows any PC user - from complete beginner, to expert - what to do when that temperamental piece of technology sitting on your desk, won't do what it should do! The book covers the basics of PCs starting with a [very] detailed description of your PC, then goes on to show you how the thing works, both software & hardware. Once you've mastered these first sections, which include such useful information as how to uninstall applications, do backups and defrag your hard drive, it then goes on to tell you what to do when the whole thing starts packing up. The first problems dealt with, are the simple ones, problems concerning apps, printers, scanners, disc drives etc. Then the book goes on to describe the more serious stuff. How to start in Safe Mode, the BIOS, bootlog, DOS & solving software/hardware conflicts. The remainder of the book, is devoted to instructions on upgrading your hardware ie: installing an internal CD/RW drive [very useful as I'm just about to do that], replacing cards, checking the motherboard, replacing hard drives etc. It ends with a description of the Internet, how it works, browsers, email packages, how to download and last but not least, Internet troubleshooting.
I can't stress just how useful I've found this book & am at last buying a copy, after having had my library's copy out for 4 months! After only 18 months of owning a PC & one Open University computing course later, I now feel confident enough to take the cover off the tower and start messing about inside. Get a copy of this great book today & save on the Valium and the hair restorer [not to mention the double glazing!].
