Highly inaccessible!
...I found the work both inaccessible and outdated. Perhaps if you're interested in a picture book type history of the Roman world then this could be for you but, if I'm brutally honest, there is little in-depth or interesting information in this book and what there is proves both difficult to find and worse to read. As a lecturer in history myself I really must advise against purchasing this book unless you really have to. Oh dear.
Detailed and thorough
Well-written and packed with information presented in a clear and structured manner. Book is perhaps more of a text book than an atlas in the strictest sense - I would have welcomed a few more maps - but it provides an excellent overview of the Roman world without falling into the "coffee table book" category - illustrations are well-chosen and appropriate, and supported by ample textual information. The authors' statement in their introduction - that they aimed "to give a comprehensive general view of the Roman world in its physical and cultural setting" has been realized.
Note that this book is not for small children.
It is an excellent well illustrated history of Rome.
I have had this book for many years and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Roman History or would like to learn about it. The story is told is told in an interesting and understandable way. The maps and illustrations are superb. I would highly recommend it. It could be used as a textbook for a survey course in Roman History. I have read many histories of Rome and this is one of the most accessible and well written I have ever had.
