Clear Thinking. This book is fantastic.
If you have ever questioned anything about magick or indeed beliefs in general that this book has the answers. The methods described in this book would be very useful to anybody, not just from a magick point of view but even from just general concentration. Even after a period of about 1 week of practise of the very basic 'Quickening' section you will concentrate harder and for longer on anything not just magick.
You must remember that these things do take time. After all you wouldn't go to the gym looking like Frank Spencer and expect to come out moments later with muscles like Arnold Schwartzegger would you? What else can I say, if you are looking to get into magick buy this book. If you are looking to improve the way you think in general buy this book. Infact the only reason you should not buy this book is if you only want it to sit on a shelf, this is indeed a crime to such as work of art.
OK as an intro, but not much more
I was surprised to find so many other reviewers praising this book so highly. It's fair enough as an introduction, albeit somewhat strident.
The stuff on sigils is OK, but if you want to better understand it, go to the source: Austin Osman Spare (in particular 'Ethos'). He created the modern form of this practical magic, and it ain't quite the same as here.
A lot of the book is about visualisations using the standard props of ceremonial magic (something which AOS would be unlikely to appreciate). It does this stuff well enough, but there are better books out there.
As to the strident talk of the universal mind, godhead and the role of the subconscious: well, there are glitches and inconsistencies (not that many, but the stuff is repeated). If you want to get into this stuff, go to the source (in this case, C.G. Jung). If you want to look into the role of belief, check out Chaos Magic (Peter Carroll et al).
You MUST buy this!
For a young pre-med student with a strong belief in "science" as the truth, this book blew my mind. It makes perfect sense, and should be read by anyone who is interested in the concept of human beliefs and emotions affecting their lives. It is also free of the more wishy-washy new-age trappings that keeps so many people away from this sort of thing. A MUST BUY!
