Stories of St Nicholas
'St Nicholas the wonder worker'was inspired by Anne Neubeger's refusal to stop believing in Father Christmas - or at least in the spirit of love and giving that he represents. This for her became a quest for the original 'father christmas' - St Nicholas - and her book is in two parts - the first a re-telling of the stories about St Nicholas, the second short stories of miracles St Nicholas is said to have performed - often involving saving children - in the years after his death. This bit also has stories about how St Nicholas/Father Christmas traditions arose across the world, and ideas for things to do at home to celebrate St Nicholas today. This book was really helpful for me - I want something that can explain to my 5 year old, when he starts asking questions - who or what Father Christmas/St Nicholas really is. It will give me something more positive to say to him, and traditions to build into our family - about the life and example of a real person that we're keeping up (keeping his Spirit alive, as Anne Neuberger puts it) - rather than having to tell him it's all made up and meaningless. There aren't many pictures, but I can imagine this book being helpful for anyone who wants to understand and share with their children something of who St Nicholas was.
