This weighty volume of 426 pages has a suprising content, it deals with a single genus, Clematis. The layout of the book is such that it is possible to either use it as a reference, or browse for specific information about individual plants. The section described as a directory of clematis is precisely that - an alphabetical listing of all known species and as many of the varieties as are recognised.

This particular volume will be of immense value to those who love clematis, whether they know exactly what the correct naming style, is or not. In this respect it is hoped that this large and scholarly work will help sort out some of the confusion over names. But do not be put off by the description 'scholarly'. This book is lavishley illustrated and aimed squarely at gardeners, comfortable both on the coffee table and the book shelf.
