In The Goddess in Every Girl, M. J. Abadie teaches teens to get in touch with their own personal Goddess energy and allies. To the young woman seeking external inspiration for her journey of self-definition, gaining a "big-picture" perspective from the feminine divine can be an incredibly validating experience. To date, though, no book on the market relates these myths of female power to the teen experience.

In The Goddess in Every Girl, complete astrological tables for Sun, Moon, Venus, and Mars let girls look up their own personal goddess allies in the areas of life purpose, emotions and body awareness, love nature, and energy and passion. With more than 50 activities, such as a guided journey to the Goddess center, directions for keeping a Goddess journal, breathing exercises, meditations, and instructions on how to create a sacred ritual space, The Goddess in Every Girl shows teens how to build a personal pantheon for their own empowerment and self-transformation.

From Chapter 4

Opening to the Goddess Within
A spiritual quest is a deeply personal intimate journey. No two are alike. There is a Way of the Goddess, but each girl sets her footprints on that path in her own individual way and finds her own spiritual framework. Yet, as all roads up a mountain lead to the summit, the end result of each journey is the same. The journey to your Goddess center will be a process of transformation leading to renewal and rebirth into spiritual wholeness. It will give you freedom in the most complete and powerful sense of that word.

There are four basic modes of preparation that will enable you to reach the Goddess inside yourself and get acquainted with Her.
Silence
Solitude
Conscious Breathing
Relaxation

Cultivating these states will help you get to know Her, hear Her, and receive guidance from Her. By practicing them, you will put yourself in a state of readiness to explore your inner spiritual landscape. In other words, you will build your Temple to Her on solid sacred ground.

Coming into Silence
Silence is golden, says the proverb. Yet today it seems as if we experience silence as terrifying. An increasing cacophony of noise produced by humans assaults our ears daily. The old Goddess people were awakened by the cock's crow or birdsong. Today, most of us awaken to the buzz of an alarm clock or the random offerings of a clock radio, so that even the first few minutes of our day are filled with mechanically delivered sound. Often the TV accompanies our ears while we dress and eat breakfast. Those of you who drive to school usually have your tapes or CDs running, often with the volume turned up high. (Forty percent of American kids already have impaired hearing from listening to rock and heavy metal at full blast.) And school busses are just plain noisy with kids acting up out of boredom.

In school, artificial sound is everywhere. Bells jangle to announce class changes. Announcements are piped into every classroom over the public address system. And our leisure hours, too, are wired for sound. When exercising, we strap on the tape player. The CD collection becomes as much a part of our vacation luggage as our suitcases. Many people turn on the TV the minute they enter the house-not because they want to watch it but because they feel more comfortable in the presence of "background" sound.

Constantly plugged in, we tune out. We can't hear the "still, small voice" deep inside that's desperately trying to get our attention. Enjoyment of natural sounds-a rushing brook, birds singing, insects croaking-have all but disappeared from many lives. Teens especially are rushed and stressed by overexposure to excess noise. We have ratcheted the decibel level up so high that "noise pollution" has become a civil and political issue.

The irony is that we've gotten so used to the constant presence of sound that silence actually causes anxiety. Consider, for example, the usual reaction to a lull in conversation. No one knows why, but when conversing, people pause naturally about every twenty minutes, creating an unexpected pool of silence in a previously animated atmosphere. This lack of talk often causes embarrassment. Anxious and inclined to nervous laughter, people feel as if they've done something wrong and immediately try to get the conversation going again. They fail to realize that silence comes of itself, for its own reasons-a natural pause that punctuates conversation. Faced with unexpected silence-whether a few moments or a few hours-most of us apprehensively reach out for the nearest sound with which to distract ourselves. To find the Goddess within, you will need to make a regular practice of allowing silence into your life.

Demanding silence for one's self in this society isn't easy. Our busy lives shout at us constantly, but to make contact with Her you will absolutely need to build some quiet time into your schedule. In order to experience the sacred in yourself, you must dare to turn off the sound.

You could view this action as a personal declaration of spiritual independence. A major component of the spiritual journey is time for reflection, but without silence, one cannot reflect. Because the popular culture does not value silence, it effectively denies us reflection. Reflection is a threat to the established order. It leads to questioning-and questioning leads to independent thought. This in turn leads to weakening of social, political, and religious authority. When those barriers begin to come down, you might just be able to hear the Goddess.

She is there within you, but She speaks in that still, small voice that is drowned out by the level of noise we permit, and even encourage, in our lives. Contact with the sacred occurs in stillness, when mind and heart are at rest. Your internal point of silence is comparable to "the still center of the turning wheel," and this unmoving center is your gateway to the realm of the Goddess within.

A Goddess Exercise
Balancing Sound and Silence

To tap into your inner Goddess self, you may have to make some changes in how you regard the use of sound. To gauge the balance of sound and silence in your life, ask yourself these questions:

How much silence do I experience in an average day?
Am I addicted to constant sound-music, TV, videos?
How can I eliminate excess noise in my life?
Do I find silence uncomfortable?
Do I use various forms of noise to reduce anxiety?
Would I like to experience more silence in my life?
How can I make room for some daily silent time?
How can I achieve a balance between necessary (or unavoidable) noise and the amount of silence I desire?

Silence is not merely the absence of sound. It is a restful space that we inhabit when we are at our most free and uninhibited.
