As a teacher she inspired and surprised by combining the moral discipline of a Dissenting believer with a devotion to literature and theatre. At the age of 30 she became famous through the publication of a book of poems. Past the age of 60 she edited, with critical introductory essays, a 50-volume set of "The British Novelists". She was also one of the first to assess the new genre, the English novel. This biography looks at her life and sets her in her cultural context.
