Product Description

Distinguished as poet, essayist, educator, critic and Dissenter, Mrs Barbauld is an excellent representative of the cultural climate of late-18th century England. Well known and respected for her spirited powers of conversation and argument, she numbered among her acquaintances Mary Wollstonecraft, Joseph Priestley, Maria Edgeworth, William Wordsworth, Amelia Opie and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. As a teacher she inspired and surprised by combining the moral discipline of a Dissenting believer with a devotion to literature and theatre. At the age of 30 she became famous through the publication of a book of poems. Past the age of 60 she edited, with critical introductory essays, a 50-volume set of "The British Novelists". She was also one of the first to assess the new genre, the English novel. This biography looks at her life and sets her in her cultural context.
