THEN AND NOW - A TRUE TRIBUTE TO THE FEW4
If you have an interest in the Battle of Britain and the true events of the aerial war over England in 1940,The Battle of Britain - Then and Now, is the text book. Text book, as this work sets aside the stories and folklore and tells it how it was - backed with the most detailed and indepth research available upon the subject of the Battle Of Britain. At times, when uncovering the details of immense bravery or reflecting upon the details of loss of life the authors have quite correctly presented the whole story leaving the reader heartened by the stories of such bravery but sad at the extent of the loss of life.

The book details every single Battle of Britain pilot, squadron, aircraft and airfield - and particularly in the latter case, Then and Now. Unfortunately, 'Now'was in 1980 and thus the overgrown airfields pictured then have become over-built, in many cases but not all making any enthusiast keen to visit and see first hand what remains of those 1940's battlefields

The book pays tribute to all the pilots espiecally those that failed to return. The pictures of the gravestones may therefore appear to be a little ghoulish but what greater a tribute can be made then to remember what those young pilots did and then remember where they now lie - in many cases thanks to the authors overgrown graves were rediscovered and mistakes of identity or rank ratified.

Is the book worth the large expense? For any enthusiast who really wishes to have the facts and the stories that went with them this is a must have book. Why only 4 stars? At times the book is lacking in layout method which makes for a stilted flow which is not helped by the update sections of the book which updates the reader from when the book was first published to its latest print in 2000. However, take your time, read the book carefully and use it as the encyclopedia of information it represents and it is not only a must have for the enthusiast but a splendid tribute to the Few and a fitting and honourable way to remember those that did not return.

The Battle of Britain: Then & Now5
This edition is described as "Mk V", which nicely maintains the aviation theme!

Quite frankly, if you have this book then you probably don't really need any others for information on the BofB - this huge tome is THE definitive work on the subject, with photographs, airfield maps, details of crash sites, list of combatant pilots, etc, etc, etc. Other books may fine-tune/update some of the detail in the light of later research, or personalise some of the events, but this book is far and away the best overall reference work as a 'one stop shop'. Excellent.
