Synopsis
This work is one of the most widley known military campaigns of the Victorian era. The story is presented through the "After the Battle" series "then and now" photographic theme and contains graphic eyewitness accounts from both sides which aim to convey what it was like to give battle in the 1870s. Additional chapters cover what remains to be seen today, both on the battlefields and in museums; the lonely and sometimes unmarked and forgotten graves of the participants; the British forts and their ruins; plus accounts of those film productions that have since been made of the 1879 war.

Gripping and heartbreaking
The story of the Zulu Wars is a gripping fable of disaster at Isandlwana, defiance at Rorke's Drift, and victory at Ulundi, but what distinguishes this new account is its complexity and overall tone of anger and compassion. In one combat action between Zulus and Boers, a staggering 3000 of the former are killed for the loss of only four wounded Boers. Behind this bloodbath lie the forces that in the first place caused this collision between military technology and a feudal kingdom - for David, as much the unsanctioned aggressive actions of individuals within the colonial hierarchy in South Africa as impersonal historical forces. Illustrated by first-hand accounts from British Tommy and Zulu warrior alike, the book is a fascinating study of notions of bravery and comradeship. As well as being an unputdownable read, Zulu gives much food for thought.
A must for all Isandhlwana and Rooke's Drift historians
A magnificently researched, written and presented book with facinating then and now photographs and naratives of Kwa-Zulu Natal battlefields then and now. An absolute MUST for those with any interest in the Zulu Wars or those intent on visiting this emotive area. Another brilliant book by the Author
david duff zulu book review
this is a excellent book on the zulu war, in fact this is one of numerous books that the author has done on the subject, what makes this book unique is the viewing of pics the and now. As you can see from the content nothing much has changed in a lot of the pics, u can easily imagine what it must have been like to have been involved in some of these battles. This is one of many many books i have read on the zulu war and even now i am learnig and viewing things which i have never seen before, this book has been a major factor in this and i would urge any true fan of the zulu war of 1879 to read this book and any others which the author has done on the subject
