Coming to Cromford? Then read Alison Uttleys' wonderful descriptions in Our Village and find that much remains unchanged from her childhood at the beginning of this century. Walk around the market place and see the chemist shop with its vessels of coloured liquid just as they were, stop at the little cafe ,once a barbers shop, where she waited in the trap while her father had his hair cut, and walk over the bridge to view the splendours of Willersley Castle. Much of the writing in this book is not available in any other publication, as the individual books of essays are now out of print. Beautifully illustrated by the talented Charles Tunnicliffe. Once you've read this, try The Country Child , a book to be enjoyed as much by adults as children.
