Whoops...
I made the mistake of thinking this was equally applicable to the solo Witch. I was wrong. This is really coven oriented, although it does have many useful reference points for all Witches. However, the book has a 'coven is better' attitude to Witchcraft which I really don't like, and hardly mentions the solo Witch. It really should be the Gardnerian Witches Bible, as thats essentially what it is, more traditional Witchcraft than Neo-Wicca. I also resent the view on skycladding. The very essence of the Pagan religions are that they are open and non-dogmatic, and here you have some know-it-all saying skyclad workings are better and your magick wont be as good if you don't? I would rather be outside in nature, wearing clothes, than stuck inside a house skyclad. Definitely one for the Gardnerians and probably Alexandrians, but perhaps not for eclectic, more modern influenced Wiccans.
By far the best...
...book on the Old Religion I've ever read. Unlike many of the 'how-to' guides on the market today 'The Witches' Bible' is highly intelligent, poetic, practical and extremely readable. It was one of the first books recommended to me when I was starting out six years ago, from a member of an old Witch family, and it contains far more information than could be found within most of the more 'modern' books. As I solitary, I had no problem adapting the rituals; the chants and songs were inspiring, and the second part of the book contains information specifically for the solo witch. Amazing value for money.
Essential for the non-fluffy amongst us.
First off I should state that, like one of the previous reviewers, there are many viewpoints in this book that I do not agree with. That said, this is one of the most comprehensive books that I have found on the The Craft; and before people start saying that they are solitaries and since it is based on coven working it doesn't apply to them I would point out that I am a solitary too, but I still believe that it is vital to learn where the pluralistic forms The Craft as we know it today developed from, and this is from the coven-based practise that this book describes (incidentally, it was my understanding that the Farrars were Alexandrians at the time of writing these two volumes, not Gardnerians, as some others have stated).
This book is a goldmine of pertinent information regardless of whether or not you are a coven member, and despite being very much a newcomer to Wicca (and owning several 101 type books) I still find that this is my primary reference material. It is true that it may be difficult to adapt the coven-based rituals to solitary working, but if I have managed to do it to a degree that I am satisfied with then I am sure that others can too. It merely requires some research, thought and application. It may be tough going at times and it may not be the one-stop solution that it claims to be, but make no mistake, if you are remotely serious about your path then you need to get your hands on a copy of this book. You will be glad you did.
