Customer Reviews
Great for fans, newbies and people who enjoyed the film
I bought this book after reading book one and having seen the film. Having really enjoyed everything I'd read so far this book can be described as more of the same but with an element of development that one should expect.
This book contains Pekar's work written in the eighties and is more settled in sontent and style.
Some great visual story telling and easy and fun but I'd suggest reading earlier stuff first or indeed watching the film.
In conclusion a brilliant book for fans of American Splendor.
you should!
This is a book, if you want to see how comics should be done whell, evenif you havent seen the flim or if you have and are just tacking aninterest in harvey pekar, this the book for you.

It's real so read it.
Well you can't go wrong with this.
This is a new collection of the same stories that Harvey Pekars been pedalling for years. Pekar was the first on the reality comic scene. During the late seventies main stream comics were still dealing with adventures and superheroes. Each tale that appeared in DC or marvel comics had a hero, usually gifted with some power or secret or something. Pekar was the first non hero to put himself into the frame and write about himself and the adventure of modern living. namely the mundaneness of it all. and pointed out that modern life isn't as thrilling as it's cracked up to be. In fact in some cases it's just a guy waiting for something to happen. His comics are not the fantasy of childhood but become the literature of adulthood. His stories read like Sam Becket or Brecht in that they look at life in all it's social forms and address the absurdity of it. Anyway these are some the most popular stories from his comic "American Splendour" republished here. if you really get into it you should pick up some more of his anthologies and see the film too it'll do you good.
