Synopsis
This collection of Julian MacLaren-Ross's work is a mix of short and longer fiction, plus journalism and literary commentary. The collection anchors around MacLaren-Ross's bestselling 1950s novella about an episode in the pre-war lives of a smart set in the south of France.
Customer Reviews
Superb writer of prose
MacLaren-Ross is well known as a stylish Soho boozer wiling away his days in various pubs with others of the literary and artistic circle of his day. But don't let that blind you to the quality of his prose. There's nothing boozy about his style of writing. Wonderfully clipped and economical, he has a fine sense of comic timing shown to full advantage in the short novel of the title and his peerless short stories. The Triple Life of Major Flask is a particular favourite of mine. His other prose writing in the second half of this book is also a joy to read, succinct, intelligent and perceptive reviews and essays on the literary greats of his time: Hitchcock, PG Wodehouse, Raymond Chandler, Hornblower, Graham Greene among others.
