Customer Reviews
Compelling, compassionate, engrossing; Essential.
The rise of the environmental direct action movement in Britain in the 1990s is documented nowhere as well as it is here. Kate Evans was at most of the major protests, and tells her own story, but also uses interviews with more than 50 others who were there too. All the warmth, the drive, the integrity and drama of these extraordinary events is told with a disarming honesty and and involving humanity. It becomes clear that these were no heroes of the mass-media's 'eco-warrior' stories; these were simply people with a will to affect the things that affect them, and who realised that morals and motivation are enough.
The book does much to break down the barrier of spectator and participant, making you realise the ordinariness of the campaigners, and also encouraging you with a comprehensive 'how to' section at the back and a massive list of relevant contacts.
But the real power in this book is in the pictures; there are dozens of stunning photographs from the campaigns, but even more impressive are Kate's own cartoons (many of which were published in The Guardian at the time) that really capture the power and the whimsy, the vision and the absurdity, the righteousness and the spontaneity of these extraordinary events.
The sheer size of this enormous book makes its price astonishing and all the more enticing. But for content, its depiction of life at the frontline of a political struggle beats any other I've read, even Battle For The Trees, Merrick's superb book on the Newbury Bypass campaign, and George Orwell's classic from the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia.
If you want to understand what it's all been about, this book is as accessible as it is comprehensive.
Extrodinary. Incredibly. Informative.
A very extrodinary, passionate book. Written by someone who obviously is very enthusiastic about the enviroment.
With incredible drawings accompanyied with stunning accounts from people that obviously have a similar passion.
Very informative book; well worth a read. It's such an eye opener on events that occurred in the '90's to save numerous achers of land throughout Great Britain.
'Eco-warriers' often betrayed thuggish; YET Kate Evans dispels all myths and betrays a group of people who are awhere of the horrors that humans can/are doing to the earth.
DON'T miss out on a fabulous expression of events, Kate Evans with out a doubt is the most incredibly artist and writer i have seen in along long time.
