Average customer review:Product Description
This beautifully produced book was commissioned by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood.
Few people will be aware of the long history of the Order of St Michael and St George, from its origins on a small group of Mediterranean islands in 1818, to its present manifestation as the principal United Kingdom honour for overseas services. Its journey from the Mediterranean to the world has been long and complicated, and the full story is ably chronicled and interpreted for the first time in this present volume.
Dr Peter Galloway has carefully mapped the historical development of the Order against the changing international role of the UK, and the result of his research is an informative, sometimes amusing, and always readable account of an Order which is less well known in its own country than it deserves. In addition to writing the history of the institution, he has also given the subject a human warmth by exploring the lives of a number of the colourful and sometimes eccentric personalities who have in their different ways contributed to the life of the Order down the years.

Dr. Galloway has done it again!!!!!!!
Dr. Galloway continues his writing of the great Orders of British history. This book is absolutely marvelous. It can be considered a companion to his previous works -- The Most Illustrious Order and the Order of the British Empire. The writing is superb and plates magnificent. Dr. Galloway has established himself as the preeminent author of British Orders. If you are interested in Knighthoods or just the history of the Foreigh Office this is THE book. Best Regards to the author. Lets hope that Dr. Galloway continues writing the histories of the rest of the Great Orders.
